Mark was born in Johannesburg in 1958. He matriculated from Marist Brothers College in 1976 and during 1982 he completed his BSc Quantity Surveying Degree at the University of the Witwatersrand. He thereafter became a registered Quantity Surveyor with the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession in 1986.
After completing his national service, he started his career with Cohen, Bahr, Lindsell & Partners, a multi-disciplinary firm where he worked within their quantity surveying department and gained experience in architectural building projects.
In 1986 Mark joined Roos & Roos Inc a quantity surveying practice where he remained for 12 years. During this time he was made a Director of the company and was responsible for all senior quantity surveying functions within the firm. The firm provided comprehensive quantity surveying expertise on a wide range of civil, industrial, mining, residential and architectural projects.
During 1998 Mark joined specialist engineering and construction contract consultants, HKA-Global (Pty) Ltd (formally Binnington Copeland & Associates (Pty) Ltd, and was involved in the preparation, analysis and evaluation of a variety of multi-disciplinary claims, on behalf of employers, contractors and sub-contractors. Mark’s specialisation within the firm was in the preparation of contract documentation as well as in the quantification of claims. He has a comprehensive working understanding of all the principal engineering and building contracts, including FIDIC, NEC, GCC and the JBCC suite of contracts.
In 2000 Mark completed the Fellowship Admission Course of the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa) whereafter he was invited and subsequently became a fellow of the said Association. In reading towards fellowship admission Mark’s specialisation was in Engineering and Construction Law. Mark is a registered member of the Association of SA Quantity Surveyors.
